For volunteers at Mary’s Kitchen on 110 N. Independence St., Thursday marked a time to remember those less fortunate by serving them a hot Thanksgiving meal.

Joe Hamilton said preparations for Thursday’s meal began early Wednesday morning by cooking several turkeys. Around 1 p.m. Thursday, he said he took stock of the amount of food he had to work with.

“We have a standing menu, but we have to work with what’s available so that nothing goes to waste.” he said.

He said everything prepared at the kitchen is made fresh for that day’s meal.

In addition to Hamilton, volunteers of all ages were on hand to help serve the less fortunate.

For Hannah Clark, 16, Wednesday marked her first time as a volunteer. She said she enjoyed the experience.

“I got to meet some new people. It was nice getting to go there and know that you were helping people out on Thanksgiving that aren’t necessary going to be able to have a meal with their family,” she said.

On Thursday, Charles White said has been volunteering along with his wife, two children and parents for five years.

“It is one of our favorite activities as a family to come give back to the community and help people out. It’s good to let people in the community know that we love and appreciate them. We are all a part of Kinston,” he said.

Carol Edwards said she and her daughter Amy have also been volunteering for about five years, and have formed a strong bond with other families who volunteer.

“We look forward to seeing each other and seeing how everybody has gotten along over the last year,” she said.

She also said it is always nice the children volunteering and believes it is good for them.

“It’s teaching them a valuable life-long lesson to help others,” she said.

Cierra Gilbert, 11, the youngest volunteer, said she enjoys reaching out to her community.

“It’s good to come out and let everyone know they are loved and cared for,” she said.

Yvonne Jones she said was enjoying how organized the operation was. She also said there is no better place to spend a Thanksgiving morning.

“I just love helping people,” she said.

Little Walter said his favorite part of the meal was the stuffing and gravy.

Adrian Cooper said he was grateful for the meal and volunteers.

“I feel blessed. I think it’s good for society to have people helping out one another during this time of the year,” he said.
