Hanks: Serving up some nuggets

Some nuggets for your perusal as you immediately realize there are only 24 more days until Christmas:

COACHES VS. CANCER: Saturday afternoon, the Kinston High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams played games at UNC-Asheville.

The final scores of the games can be found in another part of today’s newspaper, but the games aren’t what mattered – it was why the games were played: to raise money for cancer research.

The games were part of a day-long Coaches vs. Cancer event at UNCA which ended up raising thousands of dollars for the effort. The Kinston teams raised more than $1,000 by themselves.

Kudos to Kinston coaches Perry Tyndall and Hubert Quinerly for helping teach these young people the importance of giving back to our communities – and for trying to find a cure for a deadly disease.

PINK HILL CHRISTMAS PARADE IS TODAY: Today is going to be a beautiful day for another Christmas parade as Pink Hill’s celebration of the holiday begins at 2 p.m.

As we did in last week’s awesome parade in La Grange, Jon Dawson and I will be representing The Free Press in today’s Pink Hill Christmas Parade. Today, though, we’ll have special guests in our fine BMW convertible provided by Sale Auto Mall.

Pink Hill Mayor Carol Sykes will be joining us in our car, along with Dawson’s Tax Deductions No. 1 and 2.

Following last week’s La Grange parade, I posted 91 photos to a special album at Kinston.com and I’ll be doing the same things after today’s parade – so when you get home from the parade, click on the site and see if you made the cut.

A very special thanks to Dan Sale, Grant Jones, Chad Howard and the good folks at Sale Auto Mall for providing us our vehicle today and for sponsoring the photo album!

20 UNDER 40 NOMINATIONS END TOMORROW: In last week’s column, I told you about the sixth annual 20 Under 40 special section and Dec. 14 celebration, but I gave incorrect information about the deadline for nominations. You can continue to make nominations through 5 p.m. tomorrow. We are selecting the honorees this week and we’ll announce them in a couple of weeks.

You can either grab a copy of last Sunday’s Free Press for the nomination form, or simply email me the following information to the email address listed below: nominee’s name, nominee’s age, nominee’s address (email and street address), your reason for nominating the person, your name and your phone number.

Bryan C. Hanks is the editor of The Free Press; his column appears in this space every Sunday. You can reach him at 252-559-1074 or at Bryan.Hanks@Kinston.com. Follow him on Twitter at @BCHanks.
