APA to offer program on Internet safety
Arendell Parrott Academy is offering a program Wednesday on Internet safety, digital citizenship, and cyber bullying. Special Agent Kevin Roughton with the State Bureau of Investigation, computer crimes unit, will be on campus to discuss legal and safety issues surrounding social media applications with students, parents, and faculty. The event is part of the Academy’s ongoing character education program that begins in elementary school.
Special Agent Roughton will meet with students in grades 4-8 at 1:30 p.m. to educate them on appropriate versus inappropriate online actions and the possible legal ramifications from those actions. He will specifically address the most current legal and safety issues surrounding social media applications, including the Ask.fm website, Kik instant messaging, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Roughton will hold a session for the faculty at 2:45 p.m. in the library. Interested parents are invited to hear Roughton’s presentation in the school gym at 6 p.m. He will cover the same topics addressed with students, but offer information specific to parents, who are the ultimate authority when it comes to the accountability of their children's online activity.
