Jeffrey Baidy is tearful as he and about 20 other marchers protest outside of the Lenoir County Courthouse on Sunday. Baidy is the cousin of Matthew Powell, the inmate who allegedly hung himself in the Lenoir County Detention Center last week. Family members of Powell, David Bell with Citizens for Change and others carried signs and chanted 'no justice, no peace' as they marched in the rain from Lenoir Avenue and Independence Street to the courthouse. Kinston Police Officer Chad Rouse met the group at the courthouse and gave Bell the paperwork for a permit — which hadn't been obtained prior to Sunday — that would allow them to march. Melissa White and Lola Washington, cousins of Powell, said they drove from Massachusetts to find out what really happened to him. They believe he did not commit suicide. 'There just things that’s not adding up, White said. 'So we just want some justice and some answers.' Washington said she wants to know what happened. 'There is something going on in that jail that needs to be addressed and investigated,' she said. See full story in Tuesday’s edition and at Kinston.com.
