UPDATED 5:50 P.M.:
DEEP RUN — A man allegedly on the run from a state parole officer forced enhanced security Monday at South Lenoir High School.
A state probation and parole officer radioed in to Lenoir County communications Monday morning he was pursuing a vehicle containing Jaquez Rasheem Herring, 21, and his girlfriend.
Herring’s listed as a parole absconder by the state Department of Public Safety’s Division of Adult Corrections.
The vehicle reportedly headed south on N.C. 11, with the officer giving pursuit.
“From my understanding, the probation officer got behind him, (the suspect’s vehicle) blew a tire, then the guy jumped out and ran — and that was right there at Southwest Creek and (N.C.) 11,” Lenoir County Sheriff Chris Hill said Monday afternoon.
He continued, “The bloodhounds ran and found his tracks, but they cannot find him. We couldn’t put a helicopter in the air because there’s too much fog.”
Because of the close location of South Lenoir, the school responded to a lock down request around 11 a.m.
The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office sent out a notification on its new Code Red system to people in the area through mobile phones and email addresses, letting them know there was a manhunt underway.
“We’re thick down there, and we put deputies at the school as a precaution,” Hill said.
The lockdown ended at the conclusion of the school day.
Herring received charges of first-degree attempted murder and felony armed robbery in 2011 and was convicted of the armed robbery charge in 2012. He served August 2012-June 2013 in state prison, with a parole sentence meant to last until March 2014.
He’s also due in Lenoir County District Court on several matters — Monday for second-degree trespass, Dec. 19 for two counts of misdemeanor assault on a female, and Jan. 14 for misdemeanor resisting a public officer.
