Outdoor drama tells Christmas story

What stared under a tree with three props in 1982 has grown into a full Christmas production for Glen Raven Baptist Church.

“Birth of the Savior” is an outdoor drama put on by members of Glen Raven Baptist Church. The drama runs Friday through Monday with two 45 minuet shows each night, beginning at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. respectively.

Pam Parrott, co-director, said the drama is narrated and actors move along the various parts of the set as the story progresses. The story starts with the prophet Isaiah foretelling the coming of Christ hundreds of years before his birth, up to the three wise men visiting the newborn baby.

“You need to have the whole story,” said Glen Raven pastor Janice Rouse.

Parrot said the drama usually is well attended by members of the community.

“We have a lot of repeat people who come out as part of their Christmas tradition,” she said.

She said they do have spaces reserved for the elderly or people who can’t stand the cold to park and watch the performance form their cars.

Rouse said she and her late husband Ross started the play when they were just members of the congregation.

She said she came up with the idea after seeing several outdoor drams around the Easter season.

“I saw several Easter dramas, but very few people do an outdoor Christmas drama,” she said.

Rouse said only five performances have been cancelled due to weather in the 31 years the church has been putting on the drama.

Brenda Adams has been involved in the play since the beginning and said she enjoys participating every year.

“We love to celebrate the birth of Jesus and this is a big way of doing it,” she said.

Adams said she has played a variety of background roles over the years and fits in wherever she is needed.

Parrott said there is still time if people want to participate in the drama.

“They just have to be here Friday night at 6 p.m., so we can fit them with a costume and explain what they are going to do,” she said.

She also advised any attendees to bring a blanket or pillow to sit on due to limited seating.
