Santuary Bells to be in concert Sunday

The Sanctuary Bells advanced handbell ensemble of Gordon Street Christian Church in Kinston will be in concert in the Schechter Auditorium of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library on at 4 p.m. Sunday. The concert, sponsored by the Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library, will feature an impressive array of Christmas selections. Arrangements of familiar carols and original compositions for bells offer a variety that makes the program an enjoyable experience for the ringers and the audience alike.

The Sanctuary Bells, founded in 1974, is an advanced handbell ensemble from Gordon Street Christian Church. Under the direction of Joanne M. Heath, minister of music, it is a group of experienced, volunteer handbell ringers who annually participate in workshops and festivals sponsored by the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers. They perform on a five-octave set of Schulmerich handbells, which include a total of 63 bells, and a three octave set of Schulmerich Choirchimes.

Over the past 40 years, advanced handbell ensembles from Gordon Street Christian Church have rung at the White House, Kennedy Center, the 200th Anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution, the CWF Quadrennial Assembly, Regional and National Assemblies of the Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ) and at Disney World in 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

To make reservations, please call the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library at 252-527-7066, Ext. 120.
