The Lenoir County Council on Aging has named Marie Shelton its Artist of the Month for December 2013.

Shelton has been attending classes for four years starting with the late Eddie Cox.  With his influence, she developed a love for art working with acrylics. Her painting shown here  is a “Street in Saintes-Maries.”

Betty Saville, the present instructor at the senior center,  makes each class interesting, stressing the importance of value and how to mix colors. She encourages each of the students to have their own style.

The art class meets from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Thursday at the Skinner Center, located at 112 E. Blount St. Individuals 55 years of age and older who are interested in joining or observing are encouraged to stop by and visit. There is no charge for participating but members do have to supply their own material.
