Jon Dawson, columnist at The Free Press since 2008, has released his second book.
“Counterfeit Sauerkraut and the Weekend Teeth” is a follow up to Dawson’s 2010 book, “Making Gravy in Public.”
"This book picks up exactly one week after the last column in the last book; these are columns and some new material that was written between 2010 up through 2013,” Dawson said. “I was so shocked the first book performed well I decided to tempt fate and slap another one together."
Dawson was born and raised in Lenoir County where he currently resides with his wife and two children. Dawson has won 11 North Carolina Press Association Awards for writing about subjects as diverse as:
- Raising two tax deductions
- Deer hunting with drones
- A La Grange man's 36-hour ordeal trapped in a car wash
- An expose on the consumption of gay chicken
- NBC's proctology division
- A toddler arrested for lingerie theft
- The burglary that led to a father and son reunion
- Kitten tossing
- A doctor's fight to operate a funeral home out of his practice
- The War on Valentine's Day
- The decline of funeral food
- A seven-fingered man's love affair with fireworks
- Religious exemptions from homework
The book is $18 for a paperback available at The Free Press, 2103 N. Queen St., $18 (includes shipping) at jondawson.com, $17.10 (plus shipping) at amazon.com, or $4.99 for a Kindle edition at amazon.com. In the meantime, “Downrising,” the second album released by Dawson’s band Third of Never, is ranked No. 5 on the National Jam Band charts.
The band is sharing chart space with the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gov't Mule and Ben Harper. The album features Who/Bob Marley/Rocky Horror Picture Show keyboardist John “Rabbit” Bundrick, who also co-wrote two songs with the band. “Downrising” was recently featured in the News & Observer's 2013 Holiday Gift Giving Guide.
“The album is currently being played on 127 radio stations across the country; we nearly killed each other getting the thing made so we're glad it's having a healthy radio life. We're scheduled to play some shows in New Jersey in March, so I fully expect a blizzard of Biblical proportions will be waiting for us,” Dawson said.
The CD is available for $12 (plus shipping at www.jamrecordings.com or for download from $7.99 to $9.99 on iTunes, Bandcamp, Amazon, Xbox and Spotify.
