After being burned severely at a hunting camp in Sandy Bottom, a deputy fire chief with the Sandy Bottom Volunteer Fire Department has been air-lifted to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.
Lenoir County Emergency Services Director Roger Dail said the deputy chief has been with the department for several years.
"Something flashed back up on him; it might've been gas, but I'm not sure," Dail said. "The burns were mostly to his upper body, his face and head."
Dail is in Chicago for a training session and was trying to get additional information about the incident himself.
Through mulitiple sources, The Free Press has obtained the name of the firefighter but will not release his name until family members have been notified.
