Utility officials in Wilmington say a sewer overflow has dumped 66,000 gallons of sludge into the Cape Fear River.

Officials with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority say a sewer overflow occurred early Sunday morning at the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant. Utility staff members worked to put sandbags in the area and pump the overflow back into the system. Workers also put lime down after cleaning the area.

The utility reported the overflow to the North Carolina Division of Water Quality. Officials are trying to determine how much damage was caused by the spill. The plant is operating as usual.
