If you open your door and find a blue door hanger card around the knob, it’s something you should read.
A group of Boy Scouts and their parents used their Saturday afternoon to distribute hundreds of door hangers throughout Lenoir County neighborhoods, advertising the national Scouting for Food initiative.
A door hanger alerts the community to place non-perishable food items on their porch this week before the Feb. 9 pick-up date. The donations will go to Kinston’s Salvation Army.
“It helps others that don’t have food,” said Scout Jack Seay, 9.
He and Jacob Daniels, 9, arrived at their starting point, Southwood Christian Memorial Church, at 1 p.m. with their moms on Saturday.
“They’re learning how to help the community,” said Christina Daniels of Troop 1240 Southwood. “They know whenever they put the door hangers out, (and) when they go and collect, then it’s going to help somebody.”
The boys worked in a buddy system to distribute the hangers, often racing one another to the door.
“They do get a lot of exercise,” Daniels said.
She said last year, they only collected from two houses in her designated neighborhood. The team is hoping for more this time around.
