Davenport paid back his fair share

SNOW HILL — Former County Manager Don Davenport repaid the $15,079.49 he was overpaid in the seven years he had worked for Greene County until August before he retired Dec. 31.

“(Davenport) paid it in a lump sum when he got his vacation time,” Interim County Manager Richard Hicks said.

Davenport paid $110.92 in September and then $1,233.35 each month from September through November. He paid the balance, $11,268.52, Dec. 18.

Davenport, 58, had presented a payment plan to the county board on Sept. 4. Commissioner Denny Garner had asked him to sign a promissory note.

When Davenport announced his retirement in early November, he stated he would continue to make the monthly payments. But he paid the balance before his retirement day arrived.

The debt occurred from an error in July 2005 when he received a 2 percent annual pay raise less than two months after he was hired — which was against his employment contract. The error went unnoticed until 2012.

The amount of repayment would have been minimal at the time — about $146 — but with each annual pay increase for a number of years, the amounts grew larger.
