Sorority members attend area luncheon

Several members of Preceptor Phi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi recently attended an Area Luncheon in Fayetteville.

The event was attended by about 250 members of Beta Sigma Phi, mostly from Eastern North Carolina.

Local sorority members attending included Barbara Shoestock, Valerie Owen, Sharon Herring, Carolyn Kennedy, JoAnn Myers, Ruthie Stroud, Angela Shader and Anne Webb.

 

County leader addresses AARP

Mark Pope, director of Lenoir County Economic Development, updated the AARP chapter recently on the latest industries that have come to the Kinston-Lenoir County area.

The recruitment of these companies has helped to improve jobs for the area and tax bases for Lenoir County. Some of these industries are Electrolux Home Products, Sanderson Farm Inc. and Spirit AeroSystems Inc. Pope also discussed the upgrading of roads and bridges in the area.

Start a genealogy hobby

If you want to research your family tree and need help, there’s a group waiting to help you get started.

The Heritage Genealogical Society’s primary mission is researching and documenting the families of Lenoir, Greene and Jones counties. People researching other geographical areas also can join. Benefits of membership include networking, a quarterly newsletter, regular meetings, programs and field trips. The group meets at 6:30 p.m. second Thursdays at Heritage Place, in the main library of Lenoir Community College. The next meeting will be March 14.

HGS membership dues are $20 annually, or $30 for a family membership. From each annual membership, $5 is donated to Heritage Place to purchase books or materials to aid genealogical research.

North Lenoir Booster Club planning gala

The North Lenoir High School Booster Club will sponsor a benefit gala at 6 p.m. March 15 at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Organizers hope to raise $15,000 to fund the flying equipment and orchestra for the high school’s upcoming “Wizard of Oz” production scheduled for April 18-21. Money also will be used to fund college scholarships for North Lenoir Drama Club seniors.

The gala will include a social hour and dinner buffet, cabaret show directed by emcee Ray Kennedy and a disc jockey. The committee is collecting items for the live and silent auctions planned throughout the evening.
