(AP) - North Carolina troopers are trying to figure out how a body ended up on the shoulder of Interstate 85 near Kannapolis.
Authorities were called around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, but say the person had been dead for hours and the body was so injured that they weren't even sure at first whether the victim was a man or a woman.
Investigators said Sunday they likely know the identity of the dead man, but are awaiting a check of dental records to confirm.
Troopers say they were no calls for wrecks in the area. They are trying to determine if the victim jumped from a moving car, was walking on I-85 or jumped and fell from a nearby overpass.
The investigation shut down the southbound lanes of I-85 for several hours Saturday.
