Lenoir County historian addresses Rotary

The Kinston Evening Rotary Club was treated recently to an interesting historic presentation by Dr. Lonnie Blizzard on the meaning of Kinston’s “Sugar Hill.”

Originally a dump site for waste in Colonial times, the area on the southwest corner of original Kinston became widely known as an adult entertainment site flourishing with gambling and prostitution. Beginning during the Civil War and continuing through the Korean War time frame, the soldiers stationed in Eastern North Carolina flocked to “Sugar Hill” for relaxation and entertainment.

Blizzard has made this and many other presentations to a variety of groups. His knowledge of local history is a great asset to the community.

Kinston Evening Rotary meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the House of Wang.

Writer to sign book today

Dr. Joseph Askew will be available to sign copies of his latest book, “Revelation to the Father and to the Son and to the Seven Churches,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library.

The book tells the little known saga of the Seven Churches described in the Book of Revelation.  He also recounts both his battle and his son’s battle with cancer.

Askew earned a Doctor of Divinity from United Faith Ministry and served as a pastor at First Baptist Church in Kinston. He is also the author of “The North Carolina Negro in the Civil War.”  Both books are available at Amazon.com.

The library is at 510 N. Queen St. For more information, call 252-527-7066.
