Art student of four years is in spotlight

The Lenoir County Council on Aging’s painting class has chosen Janice McElhaney as Artist of the Month for March. She has participated in the class for four years under the instruction of Bettie Saville and the late Eddie Cox.

McElhaney paints and sketches daily. Her favorite subjects include dogs, family scenes, backyard landscapes and nature, or anything that catches her eye or imagination. She recently became interested in horses and has created a portfolio of sketches. A 24 x 36 canvas, “Rainbow & Horses,” is her second horse painting.

“I have found my special adventure in painting and love it so very much,” said McElhaney. “Thanks so much to our wonderful teacher, Bettie, who puts her heart into her classes and is so very, very talented and helpful.”

To join the painting class or just to stop by to observe, call the Council on Aging at 252-527-1545. The class meets from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays at the Skinner Center, 112 E. Blount St.

Red Cross holds open house today

It takes all kinds of people to make this organization work — different ages, backgrounds and skills. With this variety, volunteers can navigate their own path.
