APA wins regional quiz bowl
Arendell Parrott Academy won the Eastern North Carolina Regional Quiz Bowl Saturday at the Halifax County Agricultural Center Building in Halifax by defeating D.H. Conley of Pitt County in the final round of the double elimination contest.
Parrott advanced to regional by defeating six other teams at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library Quiz Bowl Jan. 26. Kipp High School from Halifax County and Southern Lee High School from Lee County participated in the regional. Parrott defeated Southern Lee in the first round and Conley in the second round. Conley defeated Southern Lee to get into the finals.
In the final round, Conley first defeated Parrott, giving each team one loss. Then, in the last game, Parrott defeated Conley for the championship.
Parrott team members were: Captain Lee Jenkins of Trenton, Conor Whitlark of Greenville and Forrest Kriss of Kinston, all juniors; and Thomas Grady of Kinston, sophomore. Alternates in attendance were: Gatty Atassi and William Brechtelsbauer, both of Greenville, sophomores; Hawes Collier of Washington, sophomore; and Allyson Stoner of Greenville, freshman.
“Our team did a tremendous job … and we especially appreciate the support of Kinston-Neuse Regional Library and The Friends of the Library who year after year support this educational competition,” said Vicki Kennedy, coach. “The Halifax Public Library did a great job of organizing the regional event.”
Plan to take in Stages!
The Kinston-Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce and The Lenoir County Education Foundation will sponsor Stages! from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Kinston-Lenoir County Performing Arts Center on the Kinston High School campus.
Showcasing fine arts talents of students in Lenoir County Schools, Thursday performers include: Northeast Elementary School, Pink Hill Elementary School, Kinston High Band, Kinston High Chorus, North Lenoir High School Chorus, Rochelle Middle School, South Lenoir High School Band, Frink Middle School Band, Banks Elementary and Pre-K program.
Friday performers are: Contentnea-Savannah Band (Middle), Contentnea-Savannah Chorus (Elementary), Northwest Elementary School, Southwood Elementary School, North Lenoir Band, Woodington Middle School Chorus, La Grange Elementary School, Moss Hill Elementary School, Southeast Elementary School and South Lenoir Chorus.
Tickets are $5 in advance — available at the Chamber through Thursday — or $7 at the door.
