Roundup: NL baseball downs Cleveland

A day after winning its first conference game of the season, North Lenoir’s baseball team now has its first win streak.

Landon Letchworth threw seven strong innings and the Hawks scored four runs in the sixth to rally for a 7-5 win at Clayton Cleveland on Wednesday.

Letchworth struck out six and allowed seven runs, two earned, on five hits and four walks. His defense made four errors.

Caleb Baird went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, Luke Jackson had two hits and drove in a run, Dylan Pulchalski was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Sammy West had two hits and an RBI and Noah Reese drove in a run. North Lenoir (3-6, 2-5 Eastern Carolina 3A) had 13 hits in all.

North Lenoir begins the Pitt County Easter tournament when it takes on Sanderson at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday at Guy Smith Stadium in Greenville.

 

CLINTON 8, SOUTH LENOIR 2: At Clinton, the Blue Devils dropped an East Central 2A contest.

Grant Tyndall had two hits and an RBI and Garrett Holland singled and drove in a run. Trint Turner gave up six runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks in three innings in the loss.

South Lenoir (4-5, 2-4) will begin the annual Ray Avery Easter Tournament

 

NORTH PITT 5, GREENE CENTRAL 2: At North Pitt, the Rams were held to three hits in the loss.

Dylan Taylor had a double and Ben Brann and Kevin Ormond singled for Greene Central. Chad Murphy drove in a run.

James Head gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in four innings in the loss. He struck out five.

Greene Central (5-4, 4-2 Eastern Plains 2A) begins the Pitt County Easter tournament when it takes on Riverside Martin at 5 p.m. on Saturday at North Pitt.

 

SOFTBALL

 

SOUTH LENOIR 6, CLINTON 0: At Clinton, Taylor Sandlin threw a no-hitter and the Blue Devils won their fifth in a row.

Sandlin struck out 13, walked two and on other batter reach on an error. Her no-hitter was preserved in the sixth when Cassidy Willoughby made a play on a hard ball hit up the middle. Sandlin also had two hits, one a triple. Madison Herring had two hits as well.

South Lenoir (8-2, 5-1) travels to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for a three-day tournament on Monday.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

 

KINSTON 3, SPRING CREEK 3: At Spring Creek, the Vikings and Gators played to a draw.

Hannah Vermillion scored two goals and Shannon Mayo added a goal and an assist for Kinston. Vendola Safford had nine saves in net.

The Vikings (2-7-2) begin Eastern Plains 2A Conference play April 15 when they host SouthWest Edgecombe.

 

BOYS GOLF

 

SL FINISHES SECOND IN MATCH: At Falling Creek Country Club, the Blue Devils finished second in a non-conference match with East Duplin, North Lenoir and Greene Central.

The Panthers shot a 331 and South Lenoir a 348. David White (76), Tyler Sanderson (83), Jon Howard (91) and Hunter Kennedy (98) placed for South Lenoir. Nick Suggs shot a 99 and Phillip Harrison a 102 for the Rams. Alex Brownlee had an 82, Nicholas Kennedy a 116 and Jordan Shear a 117 for the Hawks.

East Duplin’s Ian Wickline shot a 74 for medalist honors.
