DAR announces essay winners

The Moseley-Bright Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, honored the 2012-2013 winners of the American History Essay Contest at their February meeting. The essay topic was “Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence.”

The focus was on the often unrecognized people and groups such as African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics and others who provided military, patriotic and public service in support of the American Revolution. The student writer described the particular person or group and how they supported the cause for American Independence, and explained why it is especially important to honor the unsung heroes and often forgotten patriots.

This year’s winners are Greyson Smith, fifth-grader at Moss Hill Elementary School, son of Tim and Candace Smith; and Belinda Y Hu, seventh-grader at Arendell Parrott Academy, daughter of Jun Qing Lu and Xin Hua Hu. Jo Ann Huettl, chairman of the contest, awarded each student a certificate, bronze medal, American flag and booklet titled “The American Patriot’s Handbook.” Special guests were Shanna Cannon, fifth-grade teacher at Moss Hill; and Shelby Smith, Lois Holloway and Chelsea Luczaj, Smith’s grandmothers and sister. Hu was unable to attend.

The contest is open to students in fifth- through eighth-grade public, private, charter and parochial schools or home schools. Chapter winners are submitted for competition at the district level. District winners move to the state level, then the regional level, and finally to the national level of competition.
