AKA crowns Cotillion queen

Dymond Mumford, daughter of Melvin and Jada Mumford and Ericho and Tammikka Little, was crowned queen of the 2013 Cotillion Ball sponsored by the Zeta Omicron Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Rep. George W. Graham Jr., D-Lenoir, officially welcomed Mumford and her court to society.

Her father, Ericho Little, was her chief marshal, and Donathan Bryant was her assistant marshal.  Denderant Burney was her co-sponsor and Denise Lanier was her sorority sponsor.

A Kinston High School junior, Mumford is a member of DECA, FEED Club, Anchor Club, Drama Club, Art Club and Hero Club. She is staff writer for the Viking Press and works part-time at Food Lion. She plans to attend UNC to major in journalism and mass communications.

Debutantes in the queen’s court were Brittany Roberts, first runner-up; De’Voncia Mickins, second runner-up; and Shikeya Ham, Yalaina Brown, Alexis Robinson, Alicia Poole and April Davis.

Debutante members of the princess court were Shondrea Dunn, Briana Whitehead, Anjania Harris, Mieata Quinn, Tashara Murrain and Daasia Whitfield. The honor court consisted of Keshira Cobb.

Stanley Melvin was master of ceremonies for the ball, “A Waltz in Wonderland.”

Iris Nelson, president of the Zeta Omicron Omega Chapter, opened the program. Annie Kornegay, chairwoman, described the Cotillion experience, followed by the introduction of the chapter members and the singing of the sorority hymn. Rachel Harmatuck, Anne Searl and Vryna Coonin performed a violin-flute medley, and Chanelle Thomas, 201 -2012 queen, gave her farewell address.

The program highlight showcased the formation dances with the 2013 debutantes and their assistant marshals, choreographed by Paula Melvin.

Charles Richberg Jr. was the music coordinator and Leonard Palmer was the pianist.

Other participants were dancers Kayla Garner, Marquela Harris, Tiara McCall, Majustee Olds and instructor, Sharonda Graham. Brittany Cannon, Tyler Darden, Jorie Edwards, Jessica Lanier, Simone Super, Diana Swinson, Destini Tyson and Angel Worthington were the ushers.

Debutantes were presented gifts at the Mother-Daughter Banquet in March held in the St. Augustus AMEZ Church Banquet Hall. They will receive a scholarship to the college of their choice.
