4 local athletes win 2A regional track titles

Four area athletes came home with at least one regional title following Saturday’s NCHSAA 2A Eastern Regional track and field championships at Wilson Beddingfield High School.

South Lenoir’s Caroline Jones won two events in the girls portion, finishing first in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

Greene Central’s Tevin Bates also collected two titles in the boys portion, winning the high jump and long jump competitions. Kinston’s Jeremy Taylor won a regional title in the triple jump and South Lenoir’s Bryce Floyd won regional titles in all four wheelchair events he competed in.

South Lenoir’s girls team had the best finish among the three area 2A schools in sixth with a score of 34. Kinston’s girls team finished in seventh with a 31 and Greene Central 11th with a 15.

Swansboro won the girls team championship.

Greene Central’s boys finished tied for second with the host school behind North Brunswick with a score of 56. Kinston finished ninth (39) and South Lenoir 15th (7).

Individuals who finished in the top four qualified for Friday’s NCHSAA state 2A track and field championships at N.C. A&T.
