Lenoir County Smiles again

The first Lenoir County Smiles recipient for 2013 is Sarah Sever with the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library on Queen Street. She has been recognized for "customer service beyond expectations."

The weekly winners are chosen by recommendations from the community and will receive a small gift and be pictured in the Sunday edition of The Free Press, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This is the eighth year of the program, which began in 2006 to foster ‘good, friendly service with a Smile.’ The program is sponsored by Lenoir County Tourism and The Free Press.

To nominate someone, contact Marston at the Kinston-Lenoir County Visitor’s and Information Center, 252-522-0004 or lenoircountytourism@suddenlinkmail.com.

Cooking demos to begin Tuesday

Pat Walston, sous chef and lead instructor with the Lenoir Community College Culinary Arts program, and her summer students will offer cooking demonstrations again this summer to shoppers at the Lenoir County Farmer’s Market.

The demos using local seasonal fruits, meats and produce will start Tuesday, with a menu that will include stuffed cabbage, a beet salad with candied walnuts and goat cheese, and strawberry lemonade. Recipes will be available, either by email or at the following demo.

The remaining demos will be June 4 and 18, and July 2, 16 and 23.

In June, the market will join other businesses and community groups to celebrate 2nd Saturday, an initiative of the N.C. Department of Cultural Arts to direct visitors to state historic sights. Plan a visit to the market, meet friends and visitors to the community while enjoying a complimentary breakfast. The first 2nd Saturday event is June 8.
