Evening Rotary entertains speaker
Bert Statum, president of the Kinston Evening Rotary Club, introduced Joe Hodges as guest speaker at a recent meeting.
Hodges informed members of his experience as a motion picture extra. For more than 25 years, he has been a "stand in" in the movie industry. A lot of movies are filmed in the Wallace-Rose Hill-Wilmington area. Hodges appeared in several "Mattlock" events with Andy Griffith. Recently, he was in a bar scene with Robert Downey Jr. in the hit movie "Iron Man 3."
Kinston Evening Rotary meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the House of Wang.
Home Solutions: When a hurricane threatens
Saturday marks the beginning of Hurricane Season in North Carolina. This is a six-month period, ending in November, when the likelihood of hurricanes in the state is the highest.
You can improve the odds of your home surviving high winds by taking certain precautions, but you won’t make it hurricane proof. Take these steps to protect yourself and your family.
Become familiar with your community’s disaster preparedness plans and create a family plan. Identify escape routes from your home and neighborhood, and designate an emergency meeting place for your family to reunite if you become separated.
Put together an emergency kit that includes a three-day supply of drinking water and food you don’t have to refrigerate or cook; first aid supplies; a portable NOAA weather radio; basic tools; a flashlight; matches and work gloves; emergency cooking equipment; portable lanterns; fresh batteries for each piece of equipment; clothing; blankets; baby items; prescription medications; extra car and house keys; extra eyeglasses; credit cards and cash; and important documents, including insurance policies. Seal important papers in plastic bags.
Move anything in your yard that can become flying debris before a storm strikes. If a hurricane threatens, follow weather and news reports so you know how much danger you’re facing. Obey evacuation orders from local authorities.
Review your homeowner’s insurance policy periodically to make sure you have sufficient coverage to rebuild your life and home after a hurricane. Report any property damage to your insurance agent or company representative immediately after a natural disaster.
Taking before and after photographs will make insurance claims easier to file, so include a camera and batteries in your disaster kit.
