UPDATED: Greene jail administrator arrested on embezzlement charges

SNOW HILL — A man working for the Greene County Jail found himself placed in the Greene County Jail.

Eric Johnson, an administrator at the jail, was fired by Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith recently after Johnson was charged with embezzlement by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Smith called the SBI to investigate after the Greene County Finance Office found some discrepancies in the county’s inmate bank account. The sheriff immediately initiated a review of the account and then asked the SBI for its help in investigating the discrepancies.

Johnson was then fired from his duties as Jail Administrator. He was arrested but released with an unsecured bond, according to the sheriff; his first court appearance is set for June 14 at the Greene County Courthouse.

Due to the investigation being ongoing, Smith said he is unable to comment further on the case.
