This picture of Southwood’s 1956-57 defending county champion basketball team appeared in the 1957 Southwood yearbook.
Team members include J.T. Hardison, William Wiggins, Kenneth Johnson, Charles Casey, Marvin Reynolds, Bobby Dunn, Felix Jarman, Jackie Clay, Charles Baker, Jimmy Speight and Wilbur Stanley.
The team was coached by the late Van Lee. During Lee’s tenure, Southwood teams played 158 games and won 137 for an 88 percent winning record. He guided his teams to seven basketball championships in eight years and won seven straight tournament titles.
Team members and all Southwood alumni will have their annual reunion June 15 at King’s Restaurant, at which a tribute to Lee, and the late Margaret Carol Banks, home economics teacher for many years, will be highlights of the program.
