Driven on by the heavy rain, the Neuse River has continued to swell toward — and eventually over — its banks in the past days. Water flowing into Neuseway Park has caused the closure and evacuation of the campground there, although it’s business as usual at the Nature Center and playground.
Further upstream, at the boat ramp along the U.S. 70 bridges, water has neared the parking lot and made the fishing dock inaccessible. Though the water is high, it poses little to no danger to property.
According to NOAA, flood stage of the Neuse River in Kinston is 14 feet. The river will crest at 16.5 feet sometime today, and then slowly recede back to normal.
