Lenoir County Smiles names weekly recipient
This week’s Lenoir County Smiles recipient is is Kelly Artis, with Hardee’s on Highway 70 West. The program recognizes “customer service beyond expectations.”
Weekly winners are chosen by recommendations from the community, receive a small gift and are pictured in the Sunday edition of The Free Press, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This is the eighth year of the program, which began in 2006 to foster "good, friendly service with a Smile." The program is sponsored by Lenoir County Tourism and The Free Press.

Foundation awards scholarships
The Daughety Foundation has awarded its 2013 memorial scholarships. This year, the amount has been increased from $500 to $1,000 per recipient to help ease the cost of higher education.
Christopher Bell Jr. of Kinston High School will major in computer engineering at N.C. A&T State University. He is the son of Christopher and Jennifer Bell.
Aaliyan Wade of North Lenoir High School plans to major in nursing at ECU. She is the daughter of James and Alicia Wade.
Whitney Graves of South Lenoir High School is the daughter of Billy and Mary Graves. She will major in elementary education at North Carolina Wesleyan College.
Chrislyn Jones of Greene Central High School will major in occupational therapy at ECU. She is the daughter of Steven and Bunny Jones.
Reginal Hart of West Craven High School will major in computer technology at N.C. Wesleyan. The grandson of Evelyn Bright is a junior usher at Sand Hill Free Will Baptist Church, the Daughety family’s church.
Jonathan Jones of North Lenoir will major in sports management at Winston-Salem State University. The son of Clifton and Sandra Jones is a Sand Hill FWB Junior Choir musician.
May 2009 scholarship recipient Ethan Yelverton graduated from Virginia Tech in May with a Bachelor of Science in wildlife science and a minor in leadership studies. During his four years at Virginia Tech, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, a fire team leader, first sergeant and regimental executive officer. The son of Allan and Beth Yelverton, he is commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy and will be stationed at Naval Station Norfolk aboard the USS Mason.
The nonprofit foundation was founded by the children of the late Leamon Scott Daughety Sr. and wife Floscinda Cobb Daughety, former residents of Lenoir County’s Sand Hill Community.
