LA GRANGE — A car struck a woman walking down East Washington Street at 9:10 p.m. Thursday.
Iris Mae Lee, 56, was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center suffering from traumatic injuries to her head and legs. Witnesses told Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office deputies that as the Ford Focus hit her, she hit the windshield, was tossed in the air and landed on the road.
Lee is listed in fair condition.
“I realize that it is warm outside and gas is expensive, but pedestrians should not walk in the roadway, especially at night and on busy highways, or we will continue to have these types of incidents,” Sheriff Chris Hill said in a statement.
People mentioned Lee may have been hit by another vehicle, but deputies couldn’t find evidence of a second collision.
Marika Bright, 20, was driving the Focus at the time of the incident. Deputies continue to investigate the case and no charges have yet been levied.
Neither speed nor alcohol are being considered as factors in the matter.
