RADD baseball ends season
Chick-fil-A sponsored both of the 2013 baseball teams for RADD — Raising Awareness for the Developmentally Disabled.
Teams played each other on Saturday mornings from April 20 through June 15. Chick-fil-A manager John McPhaul and the Chick-fil-A ‘dog’ joined the teams on the final game day for an end-of-season cook out. Billy Hooker is the pitcher/referee for all the games. RADD baseball is available to all developmentally disabled persons of any age, male and female.

Contractor named to state commission
Charles W. Hughes III of Kinston has been named to the North Carolina Sedimentation Control Commission, appointed to a three-year term by Gov. Pat McCrory.
The SCC was created to administer the Sedimentation Control Program pursuant to the N.C. Sedimentation Pollution Control Act of 1973. It is charged with adopting rules, setting standards and providing guidance for implementation of the Act. The composition of the Commission is set by statute to encompass a broad range of perspectives and expertise in areas related to construction, industry, government and natural resource conservation and quality.
Hughes is owner of Charles Hughes Construction in La Grange.
Student named to honor roll
Carrington Wooten of Kinston has been named to the second-semester honor roll at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh.
To be eligible, a student must maintain a weighted grade-point average of 3.5 or higher in at least five academic courses while maintaining the status of a student in good standing with the Judicial Board and administration.
Wooten is a rising senior and the daughter of Elizabeth and Robin Wooten of Kinston.
Saint Mary’s is an independent, Episcopal, college-preparatory boarding and day school dedicated to academic excellence and personal achievement for girls in grades nine-12.
Library receives LSTA grant
The Neuse Regional Library has received $38,584 to hire a consultant to develop a new long-range plan for the branches in Lenoir, Greene and Jones counties.
The grant was awarded by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act administered by the State Library of N.C. These federal funds invest dollars to expand learning resources and access to information for individuals from all walks of life.
The grant will allow the library to hire Bill Millett of Scope View Strategic Advantage of Charlotte to assist in spearheading a strategic initiative that will advise the library in allocating its financial and personnel resources towards meeting the current and future needs of library patrons.
