A Kinston man booked under a statutory rape charge on July 29 picked up four more charges related to the crime last week.
Michael Wayne Edmundson, 26, was served with a warrant for indecent liberties with a child, indecent liberties with lewd and lascivious conduct, sex offense in a parental role and child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
Edmundson’s first arrest, police say, came after officials at Lenoir Memorial Hospital reported that a girl had been sexually assaulted.
Kinston Department of Public Safety spokesman Woody Spencer said law enforcement will pursue additional charges against a suspect after arrest as the situation merits.
“We want the person, the perpetrator to serve the amount of time that person deserves,” Spencer said. “So, we don’t hold back — if evidence shows there’s more than one charge to be filed, then we file it.”
Edmundson initially faced a bond of $500,000 — the new charges come with a $300,000 bond.
He’s due in Lenoir County District Court on the statutory rape charge Thursday, and back in court for the subsequent charges Aug. 15.
