How much of the 2013 WNBA season have you watched?
I must admit I probably haven’t watched a full game this season. I recall ESPN2 airing an Atlanta Dream game last month. There was absolutely nothing else going on — or at least nothing else I was too interested in. I chimed in and out.
Only if a game is on a major network would I know or pay attention to a WNBA game, and that’s just awful of me. ESPN has probably shown more games than I’ve noticed.
The only reason I remembered a WNBA champion had not been decided this year was when I got a L.A. Times alert to “Watch Candace Parker inadvertently head-butt a teammate,” which was grossly hilarious, by the way.
Nneka Ogwumike, last year’s No. 1 pick out of Stanford, made the game-winning layup in a Sparks overtime game Tuesday. When they beat the Tulsa shock 99-88, Parker was so excited she accidently head-butted Ogwumike after running to give her a hug. The wounded forward walked away with vicious blood cascading down her left eye.
Ouch.
But you see, these are one of the only few things that capture my attention in the WNBA. It’s basketball nonetheless, so I should feel compelled to watch anyway; honestly, I just always forget when it’s early and mid-season.
I’m ashamed I haven’t kept up much with the WNBA, but that’s how it is every year until at least playoffs begin. I understand so few games are aired on major networks, but that didn’t stop me from watching my Lakers after so few southeastern television networks aired their games — and rightfully so, I guess.
I’ll take it upon myself to print out the home team’s schedule, now that I’ve been reminded of their active season. Besides, the Sparks are doing much better than the Lakers were. They’re over .700 and second in the West.
Coverage will pick up in September or so as the 2013 WNBA run reaches elimination scenarios, and then we’ll all be reminded to watch the ladies compete. But I will make it a personal goal to check out a few Sparks games before then.
All in all, I’ve got to do better.
