On Wednesday, Pearson Park will be the site for a “Remembrance Day” event commemorating the 9/11 tragedy that took place 12 years ago on American soil.
The AMVETS organization will host the event, which will start at 10 a.m., to remember and honor the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
“This will be a time to reflect on a fatal day and give perspective on where we’re at as far as safety is concerned today,” Remembrance Day Chairman Guy Basden said.
There will be speakers at the event with ties to the fire department, police department and the military. Adon Snyder — the current fire chief of Clinton — will be the keynote speaker.
“As we all know, it’s a day of remembrance and a time to memorialize the event which took place 12 years ago,” Snyder said. “I’m just going to remark on changes in fire service and the world since.”
Most of the speakers will be from the local departments, including Lenoir County Sheriff Chris Hill.
“I’ll be speaking specifically on how 9/11 affected sheriffs and law enforcements around the country, how we conducted business in the past and the way we do things now,” Hill said.
Basden is hoping for a good turnout and said there will be some good information given by the speakers.
“We encourage people to come to a public event that can benefit,” Basden said. “We must remain vigilant and also recognize the people who defend our area and support those who maintain the safety of the community.”
The event is free to the public.
