GREENVILLE — On Monday, Senior U.S. District Judge Malcolm J. Howard granted a two-week extension for the U.S. Attorney’s office to prepare for a hearing on a possible retrial for former state representative Stephen LaRoque. The new hearing will be on Thursday, Sept. 26, in federal court in Greenville.
U.S. Attorney Dennis Duffy requested the delay last week as he said his team needed more time for a response to LaRoque’s request.
LaRoque was convicted on June 7 on 12 counts of stealing money from his nonprofits. He was set to be sentenced last week before it came to light that one of the jurors may have sullied the verdict by conducting research outside the courtroom.
The delay was not opposed by LaRoque’s defense team.
