LA GRANGE — Two men who are alleged to have stolen a car and committed numerous break-ins and larcenies were caught Sunday evening trying to evade law enforcement.

Dashawn Tyree Maye, 21, and Samuel Tiveon Roberts, 23 — both of Kinston — are alleged to have driven a vehicle stolen in Wayne County when a Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office deputy came upon the car around 6 p.m. off U.S. 70 near La Grange. A report said the driver signaled him by flashing his lights.

When Deputy Kenneth Black came upon the car to render assistance, an LCSO release reports he found the vehicle unoccupied. A subsequent search by deputies and service dog Jury resulted in the arrest of the two men by the search perimeter.

Following the arrests, deputies found in the car an iPad, an Xbox, a camera, credit cards and cash. Investigators believe the items were stolen in Pitt County.

“(Black’s) persistence and investigative skills, coupled with a bloodhound ready to track, paid off and solved multiple break-ins in another county,” Lenoir County Sheriff Chris Hill said.

Both men are charged for Wayne County crimes of seven counts of felony breaking or entering a motor vehicle, four counts of felony larceny, four counts of felony possession of stolen goods, three counts of misdemeanor larceny and three counts of misdemeanor possession of stolen goods.

Maye and Roberts also face Lenoir County charges of felony possession of a stolen vehicle, misdemeanor resisting an officer, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

They both received $140,000 bonds and were confined in the Lenoir County Detention Center before being returned to Wayne County for a hearing Tuesday.
