Disabled man allegedly beaten with bench

An 18-year-old Kinston resident allegedly beat a 30-year-old disabled man with a bench Sept. 13.

Saturday at 4:30 p.m., officers with the Kinston Department of Public Safety arrested Micah Dominique Brown and charged him with one count of felony assault on a handicapped person.

Shortly after midnight on Sept. 13, officers received a call about a disturbance in the 900 block of East Highland Avenue.

“A police officer responded to the nine building at St. John’s Village Apartments, and (the victim) advised that an individual by the name of Micah Brown hit him in the head with a bench,” KDPS spokesman Woody Spencer said.

Two witnesses at the scene corroborated the victim’s statement, according to the incident report. In regard to the victim’s condition, the report only mentioned that he is physically and emotionally handicapped, and an acquaintance of the suspect.

Brown received a $15,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Lenoir County District Court on Monday.
