A three-car wreck in Hubert left a man dead and sent three others to the hospital on Thursday.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said that as a Honda Accord turned into a private driveway off N.C. 172 around 5:20 p.m., the Ford F-150 behind it swerved to the left, striking the left-rear corner of the Accord and headed into the oncoming lane.

After crossing the center line, the F-150 collided with a Nissan pickup.

Kinston resident Jake Ray Jones, 61, was driving the Nissan and pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sgt. R.E. Dudley of the State Highway Patrol.

Jones’ passenger, William Jones, 66, of Pink Hill, was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he is reported to be in good condition.

Spencer Davis Sharp, 25, of Richlands — who drove the F-150 — and James Allen Denton, 36, of Hubert, were transported to Onslow Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.

Sharpe is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving left of center and failure to reduce speed when colliding with a vehicle.

The incident remains under investigation.
