Lenoir County Commissioner J. Mac Daugherty upgraded Kinston Evening Rotary club members on the U.S. 70 Bypass alternatives. Club President Karen Sperari introduced him to the members. Daugherty said a "shallow" southern route is the most likely option. The southern route would draw more travelers and impose less of an impact on local businesses and residences. The northern route, Harvey Parkway, would draw less traffic, however, connection to N.C. 11 would be a positive decision for the future. The highway commission is working to deliver the best plan for traffic flow in the future for Kinston and eastern North Carolina. Kinston Evening Rotary meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the House of Wang.
Volunteers needed at local historic sites
Make your place in history by volunteering at the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center and the Gov. Richard Caswell Memorial State Historic Site.
Outgoing people with an interest in history are needed to assist at both sites. Volunteering is a great way to meet people, build a resume and shake up a routine.
Volunteers will greet and orient visitors, as well as give guided tours and demonstrations. They also may be asked to help with research and program development.
Training will be provided to prepare volunteers for these engaging and enriching activities and familiarize them with site policies and local history.
The Gov. Caswell Memorial explores the celebrated life of Richard Caswell, the first elected governor of the independent state of North Carolina.
At the CSS Neuse Interpretive Center, learn about the ironclad gunboat and watch as a new museum takes shape. The Confederate Navy launched the ill-fated CSS Neuse in an attempt to regain control of the lower Neuse River and the city of New Bern.
The CSS Neuse Interpretive Center, 100 N. Queen St., is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Hours for the Gov. Caswell Center, 2612 W. Vernon Ave., are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
The sites are administered by the Division of State Historic Sites within the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources.
For information, contact Holly Brown at 252-522-2107 or cssneuse@ncdcr.gov. Visit the sites on Facebook at “CSS Neuse” or “Gov. Richard Caswell Memorial State Historic Site.”
