Jim Gaddis, amateur historian, unveils the Richard Caswell Gatlin historical marker on Friday in front of the Visitor’s Center on U.S. 70. Gaddis and Keith Sparrow did most of the research on Gatlin and the sign was paid for with private funds. It is green with yellow trim to differentiate it from a state-funded sign. The photo at the top of the marker is of Gatlin when he was a 39-year-old Army captain. Gatlin is the only Confederate general from Lenoir County during the Civil War and the first local man to graduate from West Point Military Academy.
