Arts center events celebrate Black History Month

A visual arts exhibit, to run through Feb. 23, opened Jan. 8 at the Community Council for the Arts, setting the stage for Kinston-Lenoir County patrons to celebrate Black History Month this month.

The exhibit features African American artists — Chick Wooten in Retrospective, Tunde Afolylan and Audrey Coward. A gallery reception honoring and remembering all the artists will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19, hosted by AKA sorority. It is free to the public.

International jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon was scheduled for a concert Saturday night, but the snow storm in the New England states caused the cancellation of this program. She was to fly out of New York, but all flights were cancelled.

The concert has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 4 at the arts center. Freelon has lived in the triangle area, toured the world, and been nominated six times for a Grammy Award. For ticket and rescheduled event information, contact 252-527-2517, slandis@kinstoncca.com or ecarmon@kinstoncca.com.

The History of Gospel through Song will be presented at 3 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Schetcher Auditorium of the Neuse Regional Library, 510 N. Queen St. The arts center is cosponsoring this event with the Friends of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library.

For more information on any event, call the arts center at 252-527-2517.
