Themes of the heart inspire Grove Park service

Bob Jeffcott and Jimmy Merritt will present an inspirational musical worship service today celebrating “Themes of the Heart.”

Grove Park Unitarian Universalist Congregation will welcome these two local musicians, as well as the entire community, to its 4 p.m. service at 1000 J.P. Harrison Blvd.

Jeffcott is a native of New Haven, Conn., and a graduate of the University of Connecticut. He has worked in the engineering field for 40 years. As a trumpeter, his musical background includes small groups to large dance bands, including the National Guard and Air Force bands.

He’s performed for radio and TV audiences primarily in St. Louis, but also for society functions such as debutante balls in Charleston, S.C., for the Ice Capades and also on the Steve Allen Show with his Air Force Dixieland Jazz Band.

Merritt is a graduate of the University of Georgia at Athens with a master’s degree in classical guitar. He moved to Kenansville to live on his grandfather’s farm where he has a vineyard growing scuppernong grapes for the winery.

A gifted musician, he plays in or accompanies many musical productions in New Bern and teaches at James Sprunt Community College in Duplin County.
