Council on Aging names February artist

Katherine Pierce never dreamed that one day she’d be painting, but she is one of those people who never stops learning new things.

After volunteering for two weeks to help residents clean up from Hurricane Katrina, she wanted to try something new. In the fall of 2008, it was to learn to paint.

Pierce enjoys painting a variety of subject matters — scenes, water, birds and flowers. In the past year, she has expanded into portrait painting.

Pierce is one of the seniors who takes classes at the Lenoir County Council on Aging on Thursday afternoons. The group recently named her Artist of the Month for February, an honor which includes having a painting on display at the Skinner Senior Center throughout the highlight month. The painting she chose for this honor she calls “Bird of the South.”

In January, Pierce won first place in three categories — watercolor, oil and acrylics — in the Neuse Extension and Community Association Cultural Arts show, sponsored by the Lenoir County Cooperative Extension.

Along with her painting, Pierce stays busy volunteering for the military nursing homes, homeless shelter, Mary’s Kitchen, battered women, severely ill patients, sickle cell and cancer children at the Brody School of Medicine, and older adult cancer patients.

She appreciates all the good things that growing up on a farm taught her. Rural life has helped her to appreciate all things life offers, especially painting.

For more information on the art classes, call the Council on Aging at 252-527-1545, ext. 5, or Bettie Saville, art instructor, at 252-527-2208.
