The Banneker Literary and Social Club, named in honor of the famous scientist Benjamin Banneker, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011. The objective of the club is to encourage the culture and social life of the community, emphasizing literary activities.
The club continues to render services to the community, including yearly scholarships to students. The Etta B. Lane Scholarship is annually presented to a senior who embraces outstanding achievement for four years at one of the area high schools.
The club recently finalized its scholarship fund project with a television drawing. Esther Burney of Kinston won the 32-inch TV.
The club is currently under the leadership of Mallie B. Stocks, president.
