Silhouette artist coming to La Petite Boutique
Clay Rice travels throughout the United States doing silhouette cuttings and having signing events for his children’s book, “The Lonely Shadow.” He will return to La Petite Boutique from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Two prints of the same person will cost $42. The cost is $10 for additional prints. A black or gold frame with mat will be available for $24. Sittings are by appointment.
Rice learned the art from his grandfather, Carew Rice, in the South Carolina Low County. It is an old art form that began in France in the mid-1700s, named for one of its most famous practitioners, Etienne De Silhouette. It made its way to America and became the rage in the late 1700s, remaining popular until the advent of photography. The popularity of these silhouettes remains for their uniqueness, charm and artistic quality.
Clay Rice has expanded the technique to include landscape scenes and children’s illustrations. His work has been featured in “Country Living,” The Washington Times, the Atlanta Constitution and “Cookie Magazine.” He has appeared in the CBS TV series “Army Wives” and is the recipient of the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award and the IPPY Award for Children’s Book of the Year.
