Historical group plans fundraiser

The Lenoir County Historical Association is planning a $1,000 reverse drawing for 6 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Woodmen Community Center on West Vernon Avenue.

A barbecue dinner will be served before the drawing begins. Proceeds will help preserve historic Harmony Hall, 109 E. King St. Several past presidents already have purchased tickets, including Earl Harper, John Marston, Bill Rowland, Reginald Stroud and Adrian King.

Tickets can be purchased from any Historical Association board member or at Harmony Hall.

A public hearing for this project will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 17 in the Schechter Auditorium of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library, 510 N. Queen St.

The project is expected to cost $137,000 with an anticipated completion date of January 2014.

Local NAACP plans celebration

Members of the NAACP Kinston-Lenoir County Branch are celebrating the work and memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the local Civil Rights leaders in the Kinston-Lenoir County community and the second-term inauguration of President Barack Obama with a formal event from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Jan. 18 at the Adkin Complex, 1216 Tower Hill Road.

In 1964, the U.S. Congress worked with King and moved the country forward with passage of the Civil Rights Act, paving the way for the first African-American president of the United States.

This inaugural formal affair will celebrate this achievement, honor the men and women who fought for freedom and justice in the community, and recognize their hard work and sacrifice. Milton Dove, Frances Dove and Isaac Pope will be recipients of the first NAACP Community Service Award that will be named in Milton Dove’s honor.

The event also is an effort to raise funds to promote and implement nonprofit civic education programs and continued financial support to aid individuals who seek assistance in Civil Rights matters. Tickets are available for $30 a person or $50 per couple.
