Artist in July spotlight
Being selected as the Artist of the Month for July by the Lenoir County Council on Aging caused Anne Vincent to reflect on her experience in the council’s art class.
“Each week, I look forward to Thursday afternoon at the Skinner Senior Center Art class under Bettie Seville’s instruction,” Vincent said. “We receive various types of information to help us become better painters.”
Vincent said each class member paints at his or her own pace and all enjoy the afternoon sessions.
“I am grateful for the fun and fellowship I receive on Thursday afternoon,” she said.
The art class meets from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays at the center, 112 E. Blount St. For more information, call 252-527-1545.

Governor’s award honors volunteerism
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2014 Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of this program that showcases North Carolina's most dedicated volunteers. Through the years, North Carolinians have proven their concern and compassion for their neighbors by volunteering in local communities.
Each county may select up to five individuals, businesses and/or groups and one Director of Volunteers to be recognized for outstanding community contributions. One of the five recipients will be nominated to receive one of 20 Governor's Medallion Awards for Volunteer Service. A local committee evaluates the nominations.
There are a few changes for the 2014 year. The forms must be completed and returned to the Kinston-Lenoir County Visitor’s and Information Center by Dec. 2. They must be typed, with two references. Self-nominations will not be accepted. The name on the certificate will be as it appears on the form. The recognition ceremony will be in conjunction with National Volunteer Week in mid-April. The winners will be notified by letter in March.
Nomination forms are available at the Visitor’s Center, 101 E. New Bern Road, by calling 252-522-0004 or e-mailing lenoircountytourism@suddenlinkmail.com.
